Dickinson go undefeated in triangular meet

Jan. 31—Dickinson hosted a triangular dual Saturday morning, inviting Dawson County from over the Montana border and WDA opponent Williston.

Forfeit matches in both duals made big impacts towards the Midgets victories to take four wins out of their last five meets.

“We went 2-0 today and that was the goal,” Dickinson head coach Trevor Conrad. “Williston was a conference dual and a cap to the five duals in three days.”

Conrad was a wrestler for Dawson County and was happy to test their mettle for their first meet of the day.

The duel against the Red Devils was a cool easy win for Dickinson with a 54-21 result. There were six forfeits favoring the Midgets, but they also won three matches by falls.

“We got a good win against Glendive,” Conrad said. “We won a number of matches. I know they had a lot of open weight classes which gave us some forfeits, but the kids came out and did pretty well.”

The Coyotes provided a well-contested dual, but were on the losing end with final score reading 33-31. The Midgets did well to stay on the mat for each match, giving up only three falls.

Williston took a four-point major decision in the 120 weight class when Jack Coles scored 13-2 over Gavin Morel.

The Coyotes held a 25-12 lead until the Midgets went on a 15 point run with two pins from James Bozovsky and Wyatt Raines and a decision win from Luke Mavity.

“James Bozovsky at 170 pound hadn’t had a lot of varsity action in the week, but James came out ready to rock-and-roll,” Conrad said. “Wyatt Raines at 182. Wyatt was losing and was down, but turned his opponent and got a big pin.”

Mavity, at 195 weight, clinched the regional win after a close three round match.

Mavity’s and Gage Glasser’s overall record this season is now 7-1 with three pins each. Troy Berg hasn’t wrestled since their meet against Century due to a knee injury, but looks to be back on the mat next week.

“Sometimes you just got to be luckier than good and I think today kind of summed it up,” Conrad. “Unfortunately we lost more matches than we won in the dual, but based on forfeits we landed on the winning side.”

After losing their last regional match against Minot 40-24, these wins could be pivotal for their confidence as the Class A season marches on to its final days. Dickinson will participate in another triangular dual in Watford City on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
